Cozumel sits along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. For a lot of divers, this is where they got hooked.

Long before the ships, Cozumel was a pilgrimage site. Maya women travelled here to honour Ix Chel, goddess of fertility and the moon, and the small temple ruins at San Gervasio still stand inland among the trees. It gives the island a quiet layer most day-trippers never see.

Cozumel is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, which shapes the rhythm of the place: mornings full of tenders and taxis, and by evening the town settling back into itself. If you have a short port day, the classic move is a reef trip in the morning and tacos in San Miguel before you sail.
