Her copper skin was originally the shiny brown of a new penny. Decades of weather turned it the soft green we all picture today. The seven spikes of her crown represent the seven seas and continents, and at her feet, mostly hidden from view, lies a broken chain.

For generations of immigrants arriving through Ellis Island, she was the end of a long crossing and the start of everything else. That is why she still carries weight beyond tourism: she is a symbol of arrival, of welcome, of starting over. Not many souvenirs come with that much meaning attached.
