There is no neutral reaction to a Highland cow. You see that ginger fringe hanging over its eyes, those enormous curved horns, the general air of a very large animal that has never once been in a hurry, and something in you softens. Built for terrible weather
Everything charming about them is functional. Highland cattle come from the Scottish Highlands and the Hebrides, where the weather is famously miserable, so they evolved a double coat: a coarse oily outer layer that shrugs off rain, and a soft woolly underlayer for warmth. It works so well they need far less body fat than other cattle, which is part of why the breed is prized.
The long horns are not decorative either. They use them to dig through snow to reach grass underneath, and to defend calves.
That fringe has a name
The hair hanging over their eyes is called a dossan. It shields their eyes from driving rain, wind, and insects — a built-in visor. It also makes them look permanently mildly confused, which has done wonders for their popularity.
